about the designer

Kulsoom Haq strives to celebrate the beauty of diversity through sustainable design. Holding a Fashion Design degree from Parsons The New School for Design as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and History from Wofford College, Kulsoom experiments with styles and silhouettes, combining facets and inspiration from different cultures, time periods, and art styles to give her designs a mosaic yet harmonious appeal. With an emphasis on sustainability, pieces are hand crafted from deadstock fabrics, vintage fabrics hoarded over the years, and excess fabric waste from companies in New York’s garment district. The result: feminine and poetic pieces grounded by sustainability and thoughtful design. She has sold her one-of-a-kind, hand made pieces in boutiques in Columbus, OH.

Kulsoom has worked as a freelance designer with New York-based fashion and costume designer Bibhu Mohapatra and worked with myriads of design houses such as Zac Posen, J. Mendel, and Calvin Klein on custom embroidery designs. She is currently the Senior Designer for the Women’s Collection at the New York-based label Robert Graham.

Debut Collection: Lyrics in verse

Kulsoom's debut collection is inspired by the Iranian miniature painting commissioned by Rashid al-Din (1247-1318) titled "Yunus (Jonah) and the Whale." The miniature is a beautiful study in diverse artistic traditions of the time: Islamic texts from Persia and Arabia, Byzantine religious manuscripts, Chinese paintings and woodcuts, and Western models of botanical sketches. Despite these varying sources, the miniature succeeds in creating a new and unified visual form. Similarly, the goal for this collection was to fuse eastern inspired prints and fabrics with classical western silhouettes in order to create a poetic yet dynamic take on womenswear. See it here.
